Which diagnostic cable do I need for my Tesla?

It depends on your model and build year. Model 3/Y (2017–2021) use a Sumitomo cable; Model S/X (2012–2021) use a Fakra HSD cable; newer S/X (2022–2024) and 3/Y (2021–2024) use a standard RJ45 ethernet cable; the newest builds use an Ethernet-to-OBD-II cable; and the Palladium-refresh S/X (2021–2022) needs a media-converter kit. Do I need a CAN or PCAN adapter for a Tesla?

No. MyTBox uses a standard ethernet/LAN diagnostic connection, not a CAN or PCAN bus adapter. Tesla documentation often mentions CAN adapters, but they are not used here.

Is the cable enough, or do I also need an adapter?

Accepted Answer

Most computers, phones and tablets have no built-in Ethernet port, so along with the diagnostic cable you usually need a USB-C or USB-A to Ethernet adapter. A cable on its own is not enough unless your device has built-in Ethernet.

Is the Model 3/Y cable just a normal ethernet cable?

Accepted Answer

No. The Model 3/Y diagnostic cable has a specific Sumitomo connector on the car side and RJ45 on the device side. A normal RJ45 cable will not fit the car-side connector. It is a single cable, with no separate interface box.
